Lazlo Biro, un giornalista ungherese, aveva brevettato nel 1938 una penna a sfera, ma senza dare esito ad una produzione. Fuggito in Argentina nel [[1940]] per sfuggire ai nazisti si associò con il fratello e nel [[1943]] dette vita alla [[Eterpen]] la prima azienda a produrre e commercializzare in maniera industriale le penne a sfera.

He fled to Argentina in [[1940]] to escape the Nazis. He teamed up with his brother and in [[1943]] gave life to [[Eterpen]], the first company to produce and market ballpoint pens in an industrial way, using the [[Biro]] brand that from then on, at least in Italy, became practically synonymous with ballpoint pen.
