Anche quando l'inchiostro non è contenuto direttamente nel corpo, o in una parte dello stesso, ma in un serbatoio separato, come per tutti i sistemi di caricamento che prevedono l'uso di un sacchetto in gomma, il corpo svolge comunque il ruolo di contenitore sia per quest'ultimo che per il meccanismo di caricamento stesso. Inoltre, specialmente nelle produzioni fino agli anni '40, era tipico trovarvi le incisioni del marchio e del nome del produttore (oltre che degli eventuali brevetti della penna).

Inoltre con l'evolversi delle tendenze stilistiche dalla ordinaria sezione rotonda si è passati a forme sfaccettate, triangolari, quadrate, ottagonali, dodecagonali, ecc.

Oltre al differenziarsi per le varie forme adottate dai produttori, il corpo ha subito anche l'evoluzione nell'uso dei [[materiali]] impiegati nella costruzione delle stilografiche, di cui appunto costituisce il componente più grande. Agli albori delle stilografiche era prevalentemente costruito in [[ebanite]] come il resto della penna, materiale che garantiva, dovendo servire da serbatoio dell'inchiostro, la necessaria resistenza chimica.

With the development of the technology all the other [[materials]] have been used then, starting from the [[metal]] (the first were probably the [[Wahl Metal Pen]]), the first artificial resins such as [[bakelite]], [[galalith]] and [[celluloid]], to pass in the '40s to the most common [[plastic resins]] still in use today.
