Benché le prime stilografiche non fossero dotate di fermaglio (''clip'' nel mondo anglosassone) ed esistano ad esempio opportune custodie da tasca per le stesse (sono molto tipiche quelle della [[Swan]]) l'uso del fermaglio (posto in genere sul cappuccio) si è affermato in breve tempo come un elemento essenziale per consentire un semplice aggancio della penna alla tasca della camicia o della giacca, diventando una delle componenti più rilevanti, presenti sulla stragrande maggioranza delle penne.
