La ''Maruzen'' nasce in Giappone a Yokohama nel [[1869]] con l’iniziale nome di ''Maruya'' e si occupa dell'importazione dall'Europa di libri e dizionari. L'anno successivo il fondatore Hayashi Yuteki apre un negozio nella città di Tokyo e nel [[1878]] cambia il nome della ditta nel più conosciuto ''"Maruzen Co. Ltd." (secondo il diritto societario giapponese, ''"Maruzen Kabushiki Kaisha"'' e generalmente abbreviato in ''"Maruzen K.K."'').
