La storia sembra apparire per la prima volta nel [[1921]], (e la pubblicità a fianco che ne testimonia un esempio è del [[1924]]), ma venne ripresa in pompa magna nel [[1934]] in occasione della celebrazione, con un anno di ritardo, del cinquantesimo anniversario della nascita dell'azienda. In realtà diverse ricerche successive (vedi [http://www.vintagepens.com/ink_blot.htm questo articolo] di David Nishimura) han dimostrato che si tratta di una delle classiche bufale montate ad arte dai reparti pubblicitari in quanto non esiste alcuna traccia di questi fatti in una storia ufficiale dell'azienda pubblicata nel [[1904]].
