Si può usare però il valore a penna scarica per un confronto con la capacità delle cartucce, esso indica infatti la capacità del sistema di caricamento da solo (con le cartucce la capacità aggiuntiva dell'inchiostro trattenuto dall'alimentatore quando si immerge per caricare non è disponibile, questo è un limite nell'uso delle cartucce, un altro sistema di caricamento questa capacità aggiuntiva la fornisce).
