La seconda guerra mondiale rappresentò un periodo di crisi per l'azienda: il razionamento delle materie prime, e la difficoltà nel trovare metalli preziosi come l'oro portò alla creazione di pennini in acciaio.<ref>talvolta viene imputato, in maniera scorretta, l'uso dell'acciaio al razionamento dell'oro o alle leggi autarchiche volute dal regime fascista nel 1937, ma non esiste nessuna traccia di leggi riguardanti l'oro, tanto che anche in seguito vennero utilizzati pennini d'oro, presenti nei cataloghi fino al 1941, insieme a quelli in ''[[Platiridio]]'' e a quelli in acciaio (marcati ''Durium'').</ref>  Come per le altre ditte si cercò di sostituire la mancanza di materiale pregiato con nomi altisonanti, e la [[Aurora]] chiamò la sua lega di acciaio ''[[Platiridio]]''. In 1938 the Selene, a button filler model, was introduced; it was made in celluloid with white metal finishes and a Platiridio nib.
