The LUS was founded in 1929[1] in Saronno by Umberto Legnani, an experienced mechanical worker, with his wife Giuseppina Carnelli when. fired because of the effects of the recession, he decided to start his own business producing nibs and other stationery. The LUS brand (abbreviation of Legnani Umberto, Saronno) was recorded in 1931. The activity started from the production of steel nibs, but around 1934, at a change of venue, it began production of fountain pens, although the main activity remained the production of nibs and office supplies.
La produzione di stilografiche diventò una delle attività principali nel dopoguerra, con la produzione sia di penne di fascia alta che economiche. In particolare l'azienda fu una delle prime, anzi probabilmente la prima, nel 1948, a lanciarsi nella produzione di penne a sfera; il modello Retracto del 1950 è uno dei primi a punta rientrante. L'azienda inoltre possedeva un brevetto (nº US-2902978) del 1955 (assegnato nel 1959) per una cartuccia dotata di pallina metallica interna che facilitasse il flusso di inchiostro. Avendo stabilito una buona posizione sul nuovo mercato l'azienda ebbe un ottimo successo anche negli anni successivi.
La produzione principale resta comunque quella di penne scolastiche ed economiche di fascia bassa, rivendute da tabaccai, cartolai e pure tramite distributori automatici. L'azienda è tutt'ora presente sul mercato come Mondial L.U.S. Spa.
