Lazlo Biro, un giornalista ungherese, aveva brevettato nel 1938 una penna a sfera, ma senza dare esito ad una produzione. Fuggito in Argentina nel [[1940]] per sfuggire ai nazisti si associò con il fratello e nel [[1943]] dette vita alla [[Eterpen]] la prima azienda a produrre e commercializzare in maniera industriale le penne a sfera.

Fled to Argentina in [[1940]] to escape the Nazis joined with his brother and in [[1943]] gave birth to [[Eterpen]] the first company to manufacture and market in an industrial ballpoint pens using the [[Biro]] brand, which since then, at least in Italy, became a synonym for a ballpoint pen.<noinclude>
