Le origini dell'azienda si fanno risalire all'attività di Nisbet Macniven che nel [[1770]] fondò una fabbrica a Balerno, nei dintorni di Edinburgo, città in cui venne trasferita l'attività, relativa alla produzione di materiale di cancelleria, nel [[1788]]. Nel [[1840]] John e Donald Cameron si aggiunsero all'azienda che diventò la ''Macniven & Cameron Ltd.'' A ''Duncan Cameron'' si attribuisce la ideazione del pennino ''Waverley'' prodotto dalla ''[[Gillot Steel Pens]]'' a partire dal [[1864]] ed all'incirca fino alla metà degli anni '70 del 19° secolo. L'azienda acquisì una fabbrica a Birmingham nel 1900 continuando a produrre pennini ed operando nel ramo dei prodotti di cancelleria fino alla chiusura di detto stabilimento avvenuta nel 1964.

The company entered the fountain pens market in the 10s (at least since [[1916]], as evidenced by the advertising in the figure, and a patent, {{Cite patent|US|940509}}, is from [[1908]]); it was also active in the French market. Le stesse penne erano distribuite in Francia alla fine della prima guerra mondiale con il nome ''S.A.R. Cameron'' (dove comunque S.A.R. non è altro che l'acronimo di ''Safety Auto Remplissage'') da Kirbie, Bird and C. con sede in Rue Auber, 5 a Parigi. L'azienda pare rimasta attiva fino al [[1964]], anche se chi riporta una fine della produzione precedente.

The same pens were distributed in France at the end of World War I from ''Kirbie, Bird  C.'' based in Rue Auber, 5 in Paris, with the name ''SAR Cameron'' (where however SAR is nothing more than an acronym for ''Safety Auto Remplissage''). The company apparently remained active until [[1964]], even if someone is reporting an earlier end to production.
